Name: Ramesh Maddi on Apr 18, 2002Comments: Dear Sir/Madam, We understand the situation in which you have to take this action but I do not understand one thing...if a person wants to commit crime, it does'nt matter whether it's 6 months or 1 month. I think the law simply is waste of time. There are millions of immigrants in this country and the proposed law would be simply a headache for all the immigrants as it would make the immigrant families to meet each other more tougher. Even if they meet, there are lot of immigrants who travel from asia and it takes more than 36 hours to travel to USA from that part of the world and same time to return back. Even once the family arrives in USA, they would have jet lag for minimum if a week. We cannot show them anything in US and we have to start worrying about their return from the time of their arrival. It would be nice and good for lot of immigrant people if the proposed law would be taken back. It would be nice if the INS would take more appropriate step in curbing the crimes like doing background checks of people who fall below certain age. I don't think a person who is 50 years or above would come to US for commiting some crime who would rather like to stay with their families in US. Please....Please have a second look at this proposed law and all the immigrants and their families abroad are already facing problems due to this law.Flag

Parents visiting us for long time was the only way for us to keep in touch with our families abroad. Please consider relaxing the rule for people above 60 years of age.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Apr 18, 2002Comments: As a law abiding permanent resident in the US who has strong family ties to India, I can vouch for the fact that the INS proposal to limit visitors' stays to thirty days in the US will have a severe adverse impact on our attempts to spend time with our kith and kin. I would also like to point out one other issue that I do not see covered in the petition below. How are our friends and relatives who visit from abroad supposed to purchase a ticket for their return journey without knowing how long a stay they will granted at the port of entry into the US How are they supposed to plan internal travel in the US where tickets are prohibitively expensive if purchased close to the date of travel and how long are they supposed to buy medical insurance for Passing a law that achieves little purpose and with no consideration for such issues does not befit the US.Flag

Name: Ying Shi on Apr 18, 2002Comments: Being a Chinese, we have the tradition to live with our parents especially when they are old and get retired. Being a Chinese working or studying in USA, we have no other choice but invite them to visit us for half year. The new policy eliminates this possibilty. It doesn't repect our culture, tradition and family value. We strongly ask INS re-consider modifying their poilicy such as adding the age limitation (older than 50 can use the old policy). Thanks for your consideration.Flag
