One Fam is excited to announce our plans to open, Bikes 4 Life (B4L), a multi-use community bike shop in West Oakland. As a program of One Fam, Bikes 4 Life exposes and empowers Oakland young people to engage in biking, recycling, and healthy lifestyle habits. For more than a decade, One Fam has provided youth development and life skills training to high-risk youth and young adults, connecting hundreds of youth to varying opportunities to positively participate in their community and make their voice heard on issues effect them. For the last two years, B4L has convened our annual "peace ride" around Lake Merritt which unites youth from all corners of Oakland to take a stand against violence and engage in physical activity by promoting bike riding. The bike rides were very successful, attracting more than 250 youth and sparking the enthusiasm of dozens of youth to bike ride. With more young people participating in bike riding, we saw a decrease in our members engaging in risk-taking activities and conflict. This inspired the idea of a bike shop where urban bike culture can be promoted on an ongoing basis. Bike enthusiasts would have a place to meet, work on bikes and share ideas. Bikes 4 Life will train and employ youth for retail, repairs, and community organizing. But we need your help. For the last year, One Fam and Bikes 4 Life have been operating out of a living room. Our membership has grown and providing work space is almost impossible. Our need for space is necessary now more than ever. We hoping that you could support our vision of creating a community bike shop by signing this petition. We would like the support of Oakland's city officials to assist us in securing a space in West Oakland. Bikes 4 Life will be more than a center, it will be a training clearinghouse promoting and educating West Oakland youth on the environmental issues and needs of our community and advocating for a healthier West Oakland for our future generations. By showing your support, together we will provide new opportunities to those most in need and helping Bikes 4 Life continue its commitment to Oakland's youth.
