Comments: The Hot Dog Man was a daily part of my experience while attending the University of Georgia. Though many memories fade over time, the thoughts of stopping by his cart as my best friend I made our way to class each day are easily among some of the richest I posses. Although thousands of student s attended the school at that time, he always remembered my name. Charles Knapp never called me by name. The outpouring of support Mr. Gundaker now receives is no coincidence. It is a direct reflection of how he is viewed by the thousands of students in whose lives he has had a part. The fact that he was removed from his spot is saddening. The fact that he was ARRESTED demonstrates a complete abuse of administrative authority. I under stand the university’s desire to keep a “flea market” from occurring on it’s campus. But Mr. Gundaker is not just “a vendor.” He is as much a part of the culture of UGA as many of the other places/things held dear by Alumni. Perhaps, if the administration is so beset on denying vendors a place on campus, they could increase Mr. Gundaker's "position" to make him a “part” of the University. Sure… it’s a loophole. But why not use a loophole to do the RIGHT thing for a change. After twenty years, I think Mr. Gundaker's has earned the right to be as treasured by the administration as he is by the thousands of students lucky enough to have known him. Craig Deaan 1995 BSEd.

Comments: This is shameful. The UGA experience depends greatly on traditions such as John and his hotdogs. It is a terrible shame that UGA pressed this matter rather than simply allowing it to go on as it has for more years than any of these school administrators and staffers have even lived in Athens. Be strong, John. You'll outlast all of this.

Comments: Doug Ross has once again revealed his arrogance. Having dealt with this petty middle manager before, his complete tactlessness in this matter comes as no surprise to me. He could have handled this in a much better way. The Hot Dog Man was causing no more of a safety problem than he has for the last two decades. The wider stairs and spacious sidewalks make the area safer than ever anyway. Ross just can't allow a one-cart hot dog vendor to divert any money that could be going towards the flavorless food provided by UGA Food Services. Following the letter of the law (by recognizing a right of way that has shifted a few feet in one direction) ignores years of tradition and the interests of the student body. Ross claims that by allowing Grundaker to sell hot dogs a few feet beyond the county right of way would open up the flood gates and cause complaints from others who would like to vend in the area. Well, no one would have known any differently had Ross not stirred up this whole mess and simply allowed the Hot Dog man to quietly continue what he has been doing for years. Had there been a complaint, then maybe Grundaker could have moved a little further down the sidewalk or struck some sort of compromise with the administration. But as long as no one was complaining (except for a few starched shirts at UGA), why disrupt a service that was clearly in the interest of so many students Short of walking or riding a cramped bus downtown, Grundaker provided the only alternative to the crap-food monopoly that Food Services holds over the campus. Even if he was only selling hot dogs...one of the few truly American foods.
