Today December 16 2011, arguably one of the most literate and articulate modern intellectuals of our era died after a year long bout withesophageal cancer, aged 62.

The loss is compounded by the fact that neither he nor we were quite ready to say goodbye, but he remained lucid and productive to the end. He joins a list which includes Shakespeare, Dickens and Wilde who also did not achieve the honour. Let's petition her majesty to take the rare step ofennoblingthis most noble of men.

A truly brilliant man and one of the great intellectuals of our age. Without personally knowing him, he aided me in my development as a human.

Standing up to bullies is one thing, standing up to those threatening your murder quite another. But then to do both with such composure and discredit them with such eloquence is just astonishing and, of course, worthy of whatever award we can bestow.

A truly inspirational man. One of the great intellectuals of our age, who propagated critical thinking, and was never afraid to speak out against all forms of tyranny and oppression.
