The City of Charleston wants us to move the Avondake 5k Race to the West Ashley Greenway...not in Avondale at all!
The Avondale 5k Race is an annual fundraiser that has raised over $350,000 for the Charles Webb Center - a developmental day care operated by the Disabilities Board of Charleston Charleston, serving special needs children from age six weeks to ten years old.
Without the support of the Avondale community and businesses, our race would not be nearly as successful.
Sign the petition to help us show the City of Charleston that we care about our community and want to continue this fun, family-friendly, annual fundraiser that benefits a children's organization.
A few of you have asked for more details on the petition, so here are the answers to some of your questions!
We have been working with the City of Charleston amicably for many years for the Avondale 5k. Recently, their main concern has become the safety of the participants. As those of you who have done the race know, we do not entirely shut down the side streets to inconvenience the neighborhood as little as possible. We are required by the City to hire law enforcement to facilitate the safe passage of any vehicles throughout the race route, and we consider that to make the race entirely safe, but the City no longer agrees. Their solution is to move the race to the West Ashley Greenway or another location (in one of the parks, perhaps). This is a community-based race that is put on by community volunteers - many of whom live in the Avondale area. The Avondale Business District and most of its members are huge supporters of this race and its current location. Additionally, we have support from a huge percentage of the Avondale neighborhood residents. As a result, we feel that the Avondale race should be able to stay in Avondale, and we hope you'll help us by providing your signatures and support!

I just saw the count hit five hundred which feels surreal because I was honestly just hoping my neighbors would notice the change. It is funny how fast things move when people start talking about keeping the race right here where it belongs in Avondale instead of some random greenway. I am still trying to process the comments and honestly I might cry a little bit reading why this race is so special to everyone.

I'm both a runner and a mother of a little girl who attended Charles Webb. The visibility of the Webb center is *critical* in this race. I've run many other races, like the Turkey Day run, that run past "residential areas," so surely we can make this work?
I live on Magnolia Rd. and I am directly affected by the road closures for this race, but I do not want to see the race relocated. There are very few outdoor community events in the Avondale West Ashley area. Please don't take this race away from our neighborhood.
This has always been my favorite race of the year. I have noticed more residents, not running, coming out to support the race. Think it will be a tremendous disappointment for a lot of people, not only Charles Webb Center, should this race be moved because it will lose a lot of its support.
I traveled from NJ to participate in the event for such a great cause. The host - Triangle Char and Bar - made my experience exceptional! It also brings many people to the area to help support the local businesses. Keep the race in Avondale!!! I will come back :)
Please keep this in Avondale. As a grandparent of a special needs child, I personally recognize the utmost importance of the special care these children need. The local community is a loving community. Please help us to continue to support our local family! Thank you!
This race is vital for the Charles Webb Day Care. A wonderful day care that has an amazing staff who cares for our precious children and grandchildren!! We need to keep this race at Avondale!! Everyone who volunteers, donates, and cares for this race and this amazing day care wants and needs it to stay at Avondale!! This is an important day for everyone!!!

This event is for a great cause. If it's created, operated in the location it started, it should stay. Success continues and grows where its roots are driven. Please consider that changing the location could change the donation.
