Morocco
rejects any haggling over its territorial integrity. King Mohammed VI
did not mince his words and even if he did not name them openly he held
Algeria and the Polisario responsible for the persistence of the Sahara
conflict. The Alawite ruler renewed, on the occasion
of the 37th anniversary of the Green March, his country’s willingness
to carry on with the UN-sponsored negotiations, despite, he said, the
desperate manoeuvres of the other parties which persist in their
obstructionist schemes. He also recalled the "bold initiative"
proposed by the Kingdom to grant autonomy to the Sahara, under Moroccan
sovereignty. If the Moroccan proposal is slow to materialize, he
lamented, it is because of the other parties’ lack of goodwill (Algeria,
Polisario). Though, the autonomy proposal grants to all the populations
of the region extensive latitude to manage their local affairs while
respecting their specific cultural characteristics. King Mohammed VI
has likewise condemned the serious violations of human rights in Tindouf
and again blamed Algeria and the Polisario for the persistence of the
Sahara conflict.
