I am sure that I can speak for a majority of those that work at O"Charley's. Great access to management, time off when you need, competitive insurance, flexible hours and the love to serve our guests. Some of whom become regulars. Heck, some go on to be friends and spouses. The great catastrophe occurs when after finishing a meal that went superbly from the time they sit down until the the time they decided to leave. You arrive at the table to find the check presenter empty with no tip. I understand that this will happen. It is the nature of the business, but usually you have three other table to help off set the 0% tip. However when you have a party (6 people or more), and most of your section is devoted to this party it is a different situation. This is just for example, but I had a 17 top party that took every table I had. They sat their for three hours and paid separate checks (again another service I gladly offer). The original bill was $351, and they left me $7. Not $70, but $7. I tipped a food runner for helping me; so timing was never an issue. They arrived separately so their was no lag in drink orders. If you take into consideration the length of their stay and the number of tables used. One could say that they ultimately took a $100 opportunity from me. $67 if they had tipped 20% , and an average of $5 for 1.5 table rotation. If this was something that happened every now and again you could take in stride and move on. I do not want to come across as a server that feels entitled to a 20% tip, but I do my job well. People leave happy, and come back and ask for me. This is just my personal account. There are as many stories as their are servers. It was my goal to speak for us all. Isn't a company only as good as it's employee's? If employees are not being taken care of the will leave. (Again-not in my life plan right now) I just think that a 15%-20% automatic gratuity for 6 or more would not tarnish our image. In fact, I think I image would increase. As sad as it is, a party is automatically judged in the server's head when they arrive. Service usually goes in stride with that perception. If there were to be an auto gratuity in place, and the experience was not worthy of gratuity we imposed; we could always remove the auto gratuity. We are proposing a 15%-20% gratuity for parties of 6 or more. I hope that the company would look into this, and respond.
