What is the Access to What? Campaign?
The Access to What? Campaign has a very important message to broadcast nation-wide regarding the current state of affairs between Deaf individuals in employment and Access to Work (AtW).
Jobcentre Plus are currently planning to roll out a flat rate fee across the country for BSL/English Interpreters; a flat rate fee of £30-£35 per hour for the provision of BSL/English Interpreters, at a time when interpreting agencies often charge a minimum of £60+ per hour for the first two hours. On the whole, most freelance interpreters will charge £30 per hour or thereabouts, but it is not unknown for some to charge more. Geographical variations apply.
What are the likely effects?
There are very few or no Interpreting Agencies who will work for £30 per hour. There are freelance BSL/English Interpreters who will work for £30 per hour, but how can we be assured of their level of BSL skill and their quality if there is no regulatory body to set standards?
In a country where demand outstrips supply, i.e. there are more Deaf BSL users who require the service of a BSL/English Interpreter than there are BSL/English Interpreters, this means that it is going to become even harder to source appropriate BSL/English Interpreters. |
