M. Night Shyamalan murdered ATLAB
Dear Mr. Shyamalan, I was once a huge fan of yours. I saw The Sixth Sense and I was blown away, so when Unbreakable came out, I was front and center, and I enjoyed that as well. Then, 2 years later comes Signs. I was very excited and rushed to the theater. When I saw Signs I enjoyed it, but found it very hard to get past the major flaw in your plot. Why would aliens, who have enough knowledge and technology to fly across galaxies, choose to take over a planet which is 70% water, the very substance that kills them? But I chose to look past that. Then came the Village. I had high hopes for the village and once again, raced to the theatre to see it opening weekend. Oh, how wrong I was. This is where your movies took a turn for the worse. The plot was horrible, the characters where unrelatable and the movie was downright garbage. I left the theatre feeling very disappointed. Then here comes Lady in the Water. Thank God I didn’t waste money on that piece of crap. I don’t have time to go into how horrible that waste of film was. So needless to say when the Happening trailer came out, I had no desire to see it. But I am a huge Mark Walberg, John Leguizamo, and Zooey Deschanel fan, so I took a chance and went to see it. And let me tell you, they were the only good thing in that movie. I get what you were trying to do, but killer plants? Really?? You must have really run out of ideas on that one. But let me get to the latest abomination. When I heard that there was an Avatar: The Last Airbender movie in the works, I was beyond excited. I love the series and I am an avid watcher. Then I learned who was directing it. I thought to myself, oh no, hes going to butcher my series. But then I saw an interview on youtube that you did about making the movie. You talked about how you didn’t know about the series until your daughter wanted to be Katara for Halloween. Then I really got worried. But then you said that you had talked with the creators of the series, and that you were in love with the story, and watched all of the books in one day. I felt a little better b/c I figured you wouldn’t destroy something that you love. So I decided that I would see the movie. Then the whole racebending debacle started. At first I agreed. I saw who was casted, especially trying to have Jesse Mcartney as Zuko. And none of the characters looked like who they were supposed to be portraying. Katara and Sokka are not fair skinned and Zuko is not ethnic at all. It was as if the good guys and the bad guys were switched. I couldn’t believe what was going on. But then I though about it. If a person is right for a role, is it right not to give them the part because of the color of their skin? So I let it go and decided that if you casted someone, it was because they deserved the part. So I was very excited about the upcoming movie. I was constantly online looking up articles and trailers and movie stills. When James Cameron’s avatar came out, I told everyone that would listen how that’s not the REAL avatar and that the real avatar’s name was aang and it comes out next year. I was counting down the days till July 1st when I could go see my movie. So today, I go to see The Last Airbender, with my high hopes and all. The beginning was hott, I saw the opening credits come to life and I was excited. Then the actual movie begins. First of all, there are certain visual aesthetics that need to be in place in the Avatar world. Katara’s hair was all wrong. I heard online that it was impossible to create her hair loopies, but it they can do all that crazy who-people hair in the grinch, then yall can do the hair loopies. Also, Sokka’s warrier wolf tail was too long. The fire nation’s hair was all messed up. Where were the fire nation knots? And what about Zuko’s prince ponytail? And his scar is way more prominent then you made it. But that’s nothing compared to the major plot points that were missing. First off, Haru was not a little boy kicking rocks, he was a powerful earthbender. The earthbenders did not live in piece in a little village, they were locked up in jail. And Aang did not make that speech to the earth kingdom prisoners. Katara did. Where were the Kyoshi warriors? Where was Ko the face stealer? Where was Avatar Roku? I understand that you can not put every little thing into the movie, but there are some elements that must be there. And another major issue that I had was how can you make it that Aang had trouble waterbending and Katara came at it easy. No, it was the other way around! And how can you not include Aang learning firebending from Jeong Jeong and burning Katara? And firelord Ozai’s face is not shown till the end of book 2, that adds to the suspense of the series. Also, when they finally reach the northern water tribe, master Paku does not teach Katara waterbending because the women in the tribe aren’t allowed to waterbend. He does not teach her until after they fight one another. Not to mention the fact that you don’t even go into the love story between Sokka and Princess Yue. They became fast friends? No, that was Sokka’s love before he met Suki. There is not a single thing past the opening credits that I enjoyed. I am so disappointed in this movie. You ruined my series and you took something that I love and destroyed it. I left the theatre feeling like I was tricked out of my money. The movie was entirely too short and was a sorry excuse for a film adaptation. I was even dumb enough to see it in 3d. I am writing to you because I want my $26 back. I know I probably wont get it, but I feel like that is a small price to pay for the horrible, piece of crap movie that I had to sit through. I hope you get millions of letters like mine and you take this as some advice and STOP MAKING CRAP MOVIES!!! Just write me a check for $26, take the rest of your money and go retire somewhere because believe me, after this piece of crap, no one will pay to see any more of your crap movies. Sincerely, Erica Maven and the die hard fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender
