Name: David JW Harrison on Feb 22, 2011Comments: I gather that the plans being considered will also preclude the use of the playing fields for other popular local events such as the Wartime Weekend and Saddleworth Summer Show. I have been asked to assist with the bid to raise funds to deal with the flooding but have not been made aware of the ramifications outlined above. Need more information on this.Flag

Running tracks are few enough in the North of England and our Saddleworth running rack MUST be kept and be improved together with the ball game playing fields.Flag

Name: Mrs Lorraine Biddlestone on Feb 22, 2011Comments: I feel it is scandalous for Churchill playing fields to loose the athletics track. What would happen to the Olympics, 200 children running on muddy grass would be a nightmare, also what would happen to Saddleworth Schools athletics team, where would they practice. Oldham council have for years dodged their responsibility to look after this site, and it seems that because they don't want to look after it their solution is to get rid of it. DIABOLOCAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Flag

Name: Jill Davies on Feb 22, 2011Comments: As chairman of Saddleworth Running Club I wish to make it clear that the idea of removing the facility of a running track from the Saddleworth area is retrograde in this time of encouraging people to be more physically active. The track is used on a weekly basis for up to 40 children through the summer months in our Junior section training sessions.Flag

Name: Shiela Waite on Feb 22, 2011Comments: The track should be improved, with lighting for use in winter. There is an absolute need to retain the track and encourage appropriate use with the upsurge in running and the increased interest in athletics coming-up to the 2012 olympics. What message are we sending to young people interested in athletics in the area if the track is removed? Already to use a maintained track they have to travel to Oldham or Ashton which means they need to rely on parents to ferry them around or public transport which isn't always convenient.Flag

Name: David Makin on Feb 22, 2011Comments: This should be upgraded not swept away. Another example of Saddleworth facilities being diminished. It appears that the march towards removing avenues to physical fitness is continuing despite the "spin" from Government [Local and National] to the contrary. As one who set up the "Trimtrack" there c.30 years ago it is sad to see this regression to what ,in time, may become a tarmac site for "events", car-boot sales, or even car parking.Flag

Name: C. Maylor on Feb 23, 2011Comments: The athletics facilities at Churchill playing fields is an integral part of Greenfield's and indeed the whole of Saddleworth's community sporting facilities. I'm perplexed to hear that the council are even considering redeveloping the site without replacing the running track and other athletics facilities at Churchill Playing Fields. The athletics facilities are used by numerous groups and individuals on a regular weekly basis, including by saddleworth Runners Club. In addition to club training sessions the running club uses the athletics facilities to provide weekly athletics training sessions for children. There are no other athletics facilities located within or close to Saddleworth. In addition, the facilities are used to host the Saddlewotrth Olympics and cross country races to mention just a few of the events that are put on at Churchill Playing Fields, which require the use of suitable athletics facilities. I cannot believe that at a time when we are looking to the build up of the 2012 Olympic games the council are considering doing away with the Saddleworth communities only athletics facilities. How are we to give the Olympians of the future any opportunity to compete and represent their country on the world athletics stage if they have no suitable facilities to experience, learn and train in the athletics disciplines? Name: Ed STACEY on Feb 23, 2011Comments: Generations of Saddleworth youngsters have been given a lifelong interest in athletics from the Saddleworth Olympics and school events - none of which could have happened without the running track. At the very least the track must remain - what should really happen is investment into an improved all weather track.Flag

Name: Mrs Anne Colley on Feb 23, 2011Comments: The running track at Churchill playing fields is an invaluable asses used by local sports clubs, schools and of course by all the children who take part in the Saddleworth Olympics. Children from village team and chool classes practise on this facility and it is used by other groups such as Saddleworth Runners not only for their own purposes but also in putting on events to encourage local youngsters to take part in competative events. There is no simalar facility anywhere else in the locality and it would be a big loss to the community. I strongly oppose this move to remove the track especially as it seems to be being done without any consultation or knowledge of how it is used.Flag
