Dear Premier Dalton McGuinty, Laurel Broten, Francine LeBlanc-Lebel, Benoit Mercier, Sam Hammond, Ken Coran, Kevin O'Dwyer, and Paul Taillefer, I am gravely concerned by the state of unemployed and underemployed teachers in Ontario. The unemployment crisis in Ontario’s education system is getting worse each and every year. Over two-thirds (67 per cent) of education graduates from Ontario’s class of 2010 found themselves unemployed or underemployed in the following year. And, the unemployment rate among new teachers has exploded to a staggering 24 per cent. This news casts doubt on the legitimacy of our provincial educational system to deliver an effective and efficient system. Why has this problem been allowed to grow? We need answers now, and real consequences for allowing this crisis to spiral out of control. I demand a full and independent public inquiry, backed by the Minister of Education, the Ontario College of Teachers, and the teacher’s federations in the province to expose the facts about this unemployment crisis and ensure that steps are taken to employ more and more graduates from publicly funded programs of education each year until this crisis is resolved.
