That good work could be reversed if nothing is done as a group of top professionals have proposed a change to that stricter drug policy that would allow them to administer any type or amount of drug as long as it is FDA approved for equine use and is prescribed by a veterinarian. Basically anything goes get the horse sound so we can show it.
Until recently the NRHA had no rules limiting the amounts or type of drugs that could be administered to horses for purpose of showing them in reining competitions.
Many times if a horse was too sore they could be given drugs to mask the pain and they could be shown anyway! This proposal by the top riders could take the sport back to the time of anything goes.
You do not need to be a member of the NRHA to sign this petition as we wish to show a desire in the general public that says no to drugs in the horse athletes the same as the human athletes.
we will take this petition to the NRHA showing that public opinion if enough signatures are gained.

The momentum behind this fight is proof that the NRHA leadership cannot ignore us any longer. These top professionals are desperate to go back to the days of masking pain for a trophy but we are not letting this happen.

The NRHA board is being pressured by a handful of top professionals who want to drag us back to the days of drugging sore horses just to get them in the arena. We are refusing to let them sacrifice horse welfare for their own personal gain and we will make sure they feel the heat from every single one of us.

The NRHA board is getting ready to cave to these top professionals who want to pump our horses full of drugs just to win a ribbon. We are about to hit one hundred signatures so get this link in front of everyone you know right now to stop this regression.

This is black and white to me...educating ourselves to be better horseman and to respect each other by competeing on a fair playing field or finding a good vet to prescribe us drugs so one can fake their way through the pen..not acceptable, especially the mind altering drugs. The NRHA is a great association and I want to see it stay that way.
Whoever uses or needs drugs to make a horse keep going or to perform shall not be called a horseman at all since the person lacks any idea about the pride and values honored by true horseman for decades. Our sport should always be about the horse and never about price money or a fake of fame.
Why would you be so mean to show a drugged up horse in the first place. Is that an unfair advantage, just because you wanted to show the horse as a 3 year old in some futurity. You pushed him too hard so now it is so lame it has to be drugged to even walk into the arena.
As an equine veterinarian who participates actively in US reining, I believe the proposed "relaxed" medication rule does not serve the welfare of our horses, nore does it position the NRHA well as stewards of the horse in the eyes of the public. I also, as a competitor, believe it flies in the face of true sportsmanship.
I believe if a horse has to be doped to compete, the horse has no business in the show pen. When it (horse) is done, it's done. What are or could there be injuries to the horse after the dope wears off? No dope.
drugs need to be enforced as many people abuse it many youth these days.
Drugs remove any hope of a level playing field.

It is important to have a clean sport in order to make it mre popular and find more attractive sponsorships. To grow and gain popularity Reining should become clean and thus an example for every other equine discipline.
