Dear Arts Supporter,Each year, nearly a million people in Tucson and Pima County enjoy the work of nonprofit arts groups: You go to concerts and festivals; you drive through a designed urban environment past works of public art; in the car and at work, you listen to music; at home, your kids talk about the dance they learned in their after-school program; and then there's a neighborhood association meeting where neighbors are planning a mural to reduce tagging and display their civic pride. Most of the things listed above were produced with some public funding. Public funding for the arts doesn't make art happen—art happens of its own accord. Public funding makes the arts accessible to the public. Money from governmental sources challenges artists and arts groups to shape projects that serve the public. These are your local tax dollars at work: about 98 cents-worth. Not much to...
