Name: Juliette Peers on Jul 4, 2012Comments: art history at La Trobe has a highly distinguished record of achievement over many decades and the discipline needs multiple centres of excellence in Australia to ferment live and challenging discourse. Richard Haese's Rebels and Precursors - a text from an academic long associated with La Trobe permanently expanded the understanding of Australian art of the 1930s and 1940sFlag

Cutting La Trobe's art history program severely jeopardises Australia's extraordinary international standing in this discipline and the humanities more broadly.Flag

Name: Grace McQuilten on Jul 5, 2012Comments: In a world saturated with images and visual stimuli, Art history teaches us to interpret and appreciate images, to think critically and deeply about the way information is conveyed, and to understand the historical context of contemporary visual culture. Let's champion and protect this important discipline.Flag

Name: Darren Jorgensen on Jul 5, 2012Comments: To whom it may concern Art history is the master discipline for the study of art in the world. If you axe it you keep La Trobe out of a high impact research area, and impair your university's potential to achieve international excellence. At our university as elsewhere art history maintains a steady stream of enrolments both undergraduate and postgraduate, a stream that will keep going for years to come. It does not experience the flux of other areas, making it possible to make long term plans incorporating its contribution to the university's research and teaching program. If you want out of the art history area, that's fine, and we look forward to seeing your students at our university. We also look forward to La Trobe's absence in one of the areas of research in which it is possible to achieve global impact. Farewell Darren Jorgensen Associate Professor and Discipline Chair History of Art University of Western AustraliaFlag

Name: Sally Hodgson on Jul 5, 2012Comments: I am a La Trobe Art History student and I am extremely distressed about the plan to abolish the Art History Department. Since beginning my studies in 2011, I have been exposed to the world of Art History and have discovered a great passion. In the process I have not only learn about art, but also about history, politics, and culture. What I have learnt from the Art History Department at La Trobe has had a profound impact on my life and my career aspirations and I was looking forward to pursuing post-graduate studies in Art History with La Trobe in the future. But half way through the first year the the Art History Major was offered again - the whole Department is to be eliminated!!! I signed up to do an Art History Major, so it seems very unfair, not to mention the effect of job losses and the amazing knowledge base that will be lost if the excellent Academics we have are made to leave. Art History is extremely important in learning about the world we live in. It is not a luxury but a necessity. I am doing all I can to garner support and will be directing people to this petition as well.Flag

Name: Debora Webster-Bain on Jul 5, 2012Comments: The history of the world and mans perception of that, is displayed in art. we struggle to get this generation to understand the lessons of history as it is..let alone another course being axed due to short sighted bureaucrats. Do not let yet another course be axed by these people!Flag

Name: Sandra T Nicholson on Jul 5, 2012Comments: The skills I gained in studying Art History, lateral thinking, looking beyond the obvious, thinking outside the square and many more, were invaluable in my career in the Justice space, a dynamic area with daily new challenges requiring innovative solutions. It is unthinkable that this great area of learning will not be available at La Trobe to future thinkers from all disciplines.Flag

Name: Patricia Martin on Jul 5, 2012Comments: The decision to discontinue Art History at La Trobe is worse than false economy - it is a short-sighted move away from some of the vital elements of a true education. This is something that has stayed with me as a thoughtful, creative and enquiring Person, since I graduated back in 1981. Please restore the wonderful Art History Department and its fine work!Flag
