ART = WORK SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR THE VISUAL ARTS IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR
On Tuesday April 9, 2013 an important community meeting entitled ART=WORK was co-organized by Eastern Edge Gallery and Visual Artists Newfoundland and Labrador (VANL-CARFAC). Over 90 people participated including artists, arts professionals, volunteers, advocates and business leaders. All came together to share our disappointment of the recent provincial cuts. In response to The ART=WORK group view this petition as the beginning of a new conversation to make clear the value of the arts: which is proven time and time again to be a good and solid investment. Investing in the arts is also an investment in our people’s well-being, our history, our culture and our economy: the presentation of our stories on the world stage fosters representation of our distinct local culture in a time of increased globalization. All this, while providing a high quality of life for our citizens here at home. For what is a community without its culture? These cuts come at a time when new possibilities for growth have appeared. We believe that these cuts have depressed opportunities for growth while also making our sector highly unstable. We cannot do more with less. We need to be a part of the consultation process. Many of those let go in the visual arts sector were one-of a kind individuals in the province with highly specific knowledge that cannot be easily replaced by frontline staff. These cuts will also discourage many young artists to pursue careers in the creative field with the campus at CNA Stephenville are now gone. PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR VISUAL ARTS IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR
