The petition
We the undersigned urge the directors of Arsenal Holdings plc to allow the Arsenal Ladies 1st XI team to play their home matches where they belong, at the Emirates Stadium, rather than in Boreham Wood.
We feel it would send a strong signal to women sportspeople across the country if Arsenal were to be the first club to transfer their women's team to play their matches in the main stadium.
Association football is the top female sport in the UK and last season over 147,000 players competed in affiliated league and cup competitions. Compare that to 1993 when there were just over 10,000 players.
Women’s Football is also one of the most supported amateur sports in the country. The FA Women’s Cup Final saw 24,259 fans pack into the City Ground in Nottingham to watch Arsenal beat Charlton 4-1, smashing all previous attendance records. And 2.1 million peopled watched the game live on TV.
Despite this, none of the premiership clubs that have women's teams allow their women's team play in their main stadium. Worse still, in the last two seasons a number of major clubs have withdrawn all funding from their women’s teams.
It is time for Arsenal to take a lead.
