Aria Concert Dress Concerns
We, the undersigned, members of Aria and Windy City Performing Arts, petition the board to reconsider the most recent revision to the performance dress code. We believe that the options presented restrict full gender expression, a fundamental tenet of the organization’s foundation and a critical value held by Aria’s members.
As an LGBTQ organization priding itself on inclusivity, it is vital that all genders and expressions be given the opportunity to dress in a way that accurately represents their gender identity. This cannot be limited to dresses or suits. The undersigned believe that the following options agree with the requirement of formality and performance-readiness, while emphasizing the freedom to express any and all gender expressions:
-A black dress shirt or blouse, with sleeves and a black skirt, with a length no shorter than three inches above the knee - Black tights or pantyhose – Black dress shoes with no hardware (no gym shoes, no house shoes)- minimal, non-flashy jewelry
Our intention is not to defy the decision of the chorus leadership or the WCPA board, but rather to clarify the dress code in a manner respectful of all involved parties and honors the mission of the organization.
