The Arapahoe Library District (ALD) located in Arapahoe county CO discriminates against their own residents so that their own residents dont even get to use their own libraries when they pay very steep taxes and fees to keep their doors open, fully staffed and plenty of items on the shelves. How do they do this? ALD allows unlimited use of everything their library offers while neighbouring libraries of Denver and Aurora limit their hours they are open, limit their computer use, have limited budgets, etc. This tax base; raised 3 times by the voters is 4.869 per $1000 in value plus fees on top of that from your car registration. This effects mostly 2 libraries of ALD and one more then the other because its so much smaller. We refer to the "May" aka the 4 s m library and Smoky HIll libraries. The 4 s m library has 75 % or more non resident use of everything from the materials, to the computers, the meeting rooms, etc. They are the only one of the 8 in ALD who has to put up with this. Smoky is also hurt because like the 4 s m library its right by Aurora who closed 4 libraries when the voters turned down a GID in 2009 and again in 2011. The full use Aurora card that ALD allows gives Aurora residents $100 pro rated for unlimited checkouts. The computers, the meeting rooms, the programs, etc are still free if you dont pay it and if you are over 65, this is all waived. This deal is not available to our own residents many of whom are over 65, low income or disabled. We are asking ALD to make the following changes to help boost resident use: 1. More items on the shelves and different items. 2. More computer access time including block computer time of 1 to 2 hours at a time. 3. No cell phone use in the library 4. Limits on facebook, youtube, games and similar items for all 5. Ability to book our meetings for a solid year as well as full access to the display cases and art wall. ALD and the county are also being sued in District Court. Due to our screwy laws; ALD is allowed to flood our library by non residents. The BOCC which appoints the library board doesnt need to allow this and this is what they were told in court this week by the Judge. The BOCC and ALD will have to sit down and talk with us within the next 90 days so please sign this peition and also leave your comments. This is a community effort so please also state where you live in ALD and that you are a resident. We dont mind some use by Denver and Aurora but we dont need to be their permanent crutch so they never get their library funding dealt with.
