Name: Jill Salberg on Dec 24, 2009Please tell us why you are resigning: APA Ethical Standard 1.02 has permitted psychologists to violate their ethical code if adhering “to the requirements of the law, regulations, or other governing legal authority.” APA members voted for a Referendum banning psychologists from settings where persons are held outside of, or in violation of, either international law or the U.S. Constitution unless they are working directly for the detainees or for an independent third party working to protect human rights. The Referendum has never been fully enforced; instead, it has been indefinitely delayed by referral to committees unprepared to facilitate its implementation. For years APA’s elected and appointed officials have steered the organization in a direction that has brought worldwide condemnation of American psychology. In the face of evidence that the APA has violated its own By-laws and Rules by collaborating with military and intelligence officials to secure these policies I have decided to resign from the organization because I no longer believe that change is possible under current APA management. Without a thorough overhaul of the APA management and an independent investigation into how such policies were made, we fear that the organization that is the official voice of psychologists in the United States will continue to violate its own By-laws by supporting practices and policies that shame and discredit psychologists everywhere.Flag

Name: Johanna M. Mayer on Jan 7, 2010Please tell us why you are resigning: I no longer recognize the organization I joined over 30 years ago. Back then, APA defended a psychologist jailed for defying a court order to violate client confidentiality. I have been deeply disappointed by APA's failure to place ethics above the demands of legal and governmental authority and by its complicity in violations of international law and human right abuses.Flag

Name: Mary Fabri on Jan 21, 2010Please tell us why you are resigning: As senior director of a torture treatment center and as a clinician who has provided treatment to torture survivors for more than 23 years, I cannot in good conscious belong to a professional organization that does not take a clear stance against any psychologist having to do with any aspect of torture; that engages in covert relationships with the military and/or CIA and does not provide transparency to its members; and does not encourage open discussion of this issue and administration does not respond to the appeals of its members.Flag

Name: Elizabeth Hegeman Phd on Mar 1, 2010Please tell us why you are resigning: The governance of the APA has failed to respond adequately to the need for taking a stand on ethical issues, especially regarding participation of psychologists in torture and violations of human rights. Further, in the developments surrounding this controversy, the leadership has shown itself not only unresponsive and lying, but corrupt in its inivolvement with corporate and governmental interests rather than the proper role of psychologists.Flag

Name: Maria T. Russo, Ph.D. on Mar 1, 2010Please tell us why you are resigning: it is very disheartening to belong to a professional organization which can do good for so many and undo the good by doing so much harm. I am, of course, referring to the issues of psychologists participation in torture.Flag

Name: Jeanne Wolff Bernstein, Ph.D. on Mar 22, 2010Please tell us why you are resigning: For all the reasons tis petition outlines and also for the reluctance on the part of the APA to fire those officials who were implementing and representing APA's ethical stance in the past while fully knowing that there were many violations committed by a number of psychologists at the military detention centers.Flag
