Please tell us why you are resigning: It is long past time that potential complicity of APA leadership in detainee abuse be investigated. Only a thorough, independent, investigation can clarify if, or how, this complicity occurred. Until that occurs, the APA lacks legitimacy as a representative of the best of psychology.

Please tell us why you are resigning: For all of the petition reasons and then some. But we will not stop the pressure we have put on the APA these past years. We will continue the fight from outside.

Please tell us why you are resigning: The APA governance has not adequately responded to the ethical principles to which our profession should hold. I do not want to be represented by an organization that can respond to the clear referendum with such delaying strategies and failure to enforce.

Please tell us why you are resigning: I have already resigned for the reasons spelled out in this petition. Our department of psychology at Long Island University/CW Post Campus-with an APA accredited clinical psychology program-sent a letter in 2008 to APA expressing support for the referendum

Please tell us why you are resigning: I support all of the points expressed in the petition. I have joined Psycholgoists for Social Responsibility, having concluded that I cannot ethcially support APA. Their inaction and dissembling is offensive and appalling.

Name: Brad Olson on Nov 10, 2009
Please tell us why you are resigning: I stopped paying my dues to the APA several years ago. I felt it was personally inappropriate to be associated with an organization that promoted psychologist involvement in the most unethical activities, including direct coercive interrogation at places like Guantanamo. And then on such an overwhelming number of occasions over a series of years the APA deviously stalled and derailed efforts to establish clear policies, refused to change a most absurd section of its ethics code, and took many other historically inappropriate steps. This resignation is a relief to me, particularly since Psychologists for Social Responsibility and other groups provide such a superior alternative with an emphasis on social justice and the creation of a better world through psychology--rather than the opposite.

If I had known how complicit APA was in a decades-long history of support to the CIA and other military-intelligence agencies, and how crucial some APA leaders were in the original research into psychological torture, I would certainly never have joined.

Please tell us why you are resigning: The past two years of increasing self-education about the APA’s handling of its ethical responsibilities in its relationship with the nation’s military complex has undermined my allegiance to the organization. The APA has sacrificed its scientific as well as social and ethical responsibilities in order to collude with power and win support and funding for its members and programs. It is not a group that I am willing to be a part of.

Please tell us why you are resigning: After withholding my dues for two years and trying to work within the system to effect change, I am now convinced that the APA leadership is and has been complicit in immoral and unethical acts completely antithetical to the values of the profession and that the leadership has no intention of making substantive changes in its focus. The APA does not represent me nor uphold the values I believe make this profession worthwhile. I have no desire to be counted among its members.

Please tell us why you are resigning: For several years we have attempted to get the APA to recognize that its collaboration with the US administrations detention and interrogation of enemy combatants is immoral -- even if it is not unethical according to the APAs carefully doctored ethical code. At this point it is clear that there is little hope of any real change in the APAs moral stance until there is a change in the APAs leadership. Under these circumstances, I have no choice but to resign.
