Pro ana websites promote the eating disorder anorexia nervosa as a 'lifestyle choice' rather than a deadly disease. Pro Mia websites promote bulimia. Anyone can access a these dangerous sites, including young children (some as young as seven years old), and vulnerable teenagers. Pro ana sites claim to support people who want to be skinny, by providing 'Thinspiration' in the form of mottos, reminders and pictures of skeletally thin women and girls. Viewers are meant to aspire to that look, by keeping themselves from eating. However, pro ana/mia sites do NOT support people with anorexia/bulimia, despite their claims. Instead, it locks them into their illness, and it can induce the illness in vulnerable or susceptible people. This petition asks that these websites be banned, or at least restricted only to adults. Our campaign is aimed toward the UK government, but signatures are wanted from other countries as well. This issue affects people all over the world! Specifically, we would like to ban "material that provokes a person to seek excessive thinness by encouraging prolonged restriction of nourishment". We are two fifteen year old girls, who are aware of the dangers of these sites, as they have had a negative effect in one of our lives.
