Animal experimenting is the use of non human animals in tests to gain knowledge that could possibly benefit humans. Animals that can be found in an experimenting lab include; rats, mice, guinea pigs, dogs, cats, rabbits, nonhuman primates, and farm animals. Although animal testing is common all over the nation, the citizens of the U.S. rarely see what goes on in the lab. Experiments are done on animals for numerous reasons. Cosmetic companies kill millions of animals by testing their products every year. These companies claim they are testing on animals to establish the safety of their product and ingredients for consumers. However, alternative testing methods are available and are also proven more reliable. Most animal testing is highly painful and results in death. Cosmetic animal testing should be banned in the United States because it is unfair and cruel to inflict pain and take the lives of innocent animals just for research. According to Buzzle, only 5-25% of animal tests and human results are agreeable (Borade ). If the results from animal testing rarely match results from humans, then it is not practical to test these products on animals at all. Although cosmetic companies are required to inform consumers if their product is tested on animals, many consumers have no clue what kind of horrific procedures are done to these animals. According to NAVS.org, a common procedure done is the Draize test. In this process, scientists use clamps to hold albino rabbits’ eyes open while rubbing the product of a company into the unique red eyes of these creatures, and the tests can go on for up to seven days. Common products used in the Draize test include: shampoo, soap, toothpaste, oven cleaner, lipstick, and lawn products. Often this test results in the rabbit breaking its fragile neck by trying to escape the horrendous pain. Lethal dosage (LD) or LD 50 experiments are done on animals to determine how much of a product can be swallowed before death. Animals are forced to ingest poisonous ingredients until they die (The National Anti-Vivisection Society). The reason why it is so important to understand what these scientists are actually doing to the animals is because the tests done are both cruel and inhumane. Nothing on this planet, animal or human, should ever have to experience a death like this. Not only do these innocent animals have to endure these painful experiments and horrifying deaths, but they live the majority of their life in a cage. The only human attention these animals receive is when scientists are causing them pain. Animal experimenting is also inherently inaccurate. LD experiments do not assess human health hazards, it only measures how toxic the product is to the species of animal tested on. Lethal dosage test results also vary according to the age, sex, and nutritional conditions of the creature being tested on. Unfortunately, the unreliability of animal testing makes it appealing to some companies, as it allows manufacturers to put basically any product on the market. Although cosmetic companies all over the nation still continue to test their products on animals, a significant number of companies have realized the horror involved with animal experimentation, and test their products with alternative methods that lead them to more reliable results. Some companies that do not allow their product to be tested on animals are: Bare Escentuals, Bath and Body Works, Clinique, Estee Lauder, and M.A.C. cosmetics. Major companies that continue to test their products on animals are: Arm & Hammer, Clorox, CoverGirl, Johnson&Johnson, L’Oreal, Olay, Pantene, and Dial. A full list of companies that do not test/do test on animals can be found online, at www.peta.org. If consumers would dedicate to only buying products that do not test on animals, other companies that are still experimenting on animals will see that we will not buy their product until they stop. Consumers must use their purchasing power to send a strong message to these manufacturers. These companies know that what they are doing is inhumane, but until it starts affecting the sales of the products, they will show no mercy.
