Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment. They do not have voices so we must be advocates for the animals against humans that wish to use them selfishly and cruelly. The University of California, Davis is home to The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC): a federally funded, $24 million dollar institution that relies heavily on grant money for its funding. In addition to imprisoning about 5,400 primates, it also contains approximately 500 dogs, 400 cats, 450 rabbits, and 250 horses that are used for experiments testing human diseases. The facility is not only a research facility, but it also breeds monkeys. There have been various accounts of monkeys dying from carelessness on the humans’ behalf. Seven long-tailed Macaques died from a “heater malfunction” in which their room rose to 115 degrees Fahrenheit, boiling them to death. Self-abuse is prevalent among the monkeys. Behaviors include severe self-biting, hair-plucking, and head-banging. This is caused by distress due to copious amounts of experiments and surgery done on the animals. Experiments involving surgery without the use of anesthesia is common in the facility. The constant effects and pain from experimental surgery and also the fact that the monkeys are left alone in small, single cages cause this self-abuse. The purpose of this petition is to contact Chancellor Linda Katehi and bring the issues and the animal abuse at the center to her attention. More voices need to be heard in order to make a change, and the animals do not have time to wait for change while their safety, health, and lives are on the line. There has been an ongoing battle between animal right’s activists and the primate facility and it is time that it is put to an end before more animals are injured or killed in order to receive grants and money. The CNPRC has been asked many times to make changes, and they continue to refuse. Chancellor Katehi should address this issue and enforce ethical change.
