EAST SIDE HIGH SCHOOL IN NEWARK, N.J. A big flap over a yearbook photo at Newark's East Side High School. Staff used markers to black out a picture of a male student kissing his boyfriend from all copies of the school's yearbook before they were distributed to students this week. Marion Bolden, Newark's superintendent of schools, says the photograph of 18-year-old Andre Jackson kissing David Escobales in the yearbook was "illicit" and looked provocative. It was blacked out after Russell Garris, the district's assistant superintendent who oversees the city's high schools, told Bolden he was concerned that the photo could upset parents. Bolden says an investigation into who approved the final draft of the yearbook and the rules about what can be published in the future will be reviewed. Newark school officials blacked out a yearbook picture of Andre Jackson kissing his boyfriend David Escobales. School officials decided the photo was "inappropriate."

I am honestly a bit overwhelmed by the kindness shown here and I never thought this would reach so many people. This momentum belongs entirely to you because I just started a page and you are the ones keeping it alive. Thank you for showing Andre that he is not alone in this.

Absolutely ridiculous. It is a photo of two people kissing. Get over it.

So much for freedom of expression. My tax dollars go to this school and I dont want them censoring students just because they are scared of a few angry parents.

This is 2014 not the dark ages. Let kids be kids. The school needs to stop acting like they are the morality police.
