As you are well aware of Ms. Trujillo's case, she is currently being investigated for an action that we as nurses have always considered as part of our job. Ms. Trujillo was merely educating a patient regarding their upcoming surgery, using materials provided by her employer. When Ms. Trujillo realized that the patient was unclear of their options, she, as a nurse, felt the need to intervene and advocate for the patient in order for them to make the most informed decision about their care. This included consulting with Hospice Care to visit with the patient to explain what their services would be, not to be confused with placing the patient on Hospice. This was merely a consult, similar to how a nurse would consult with a Lactation Specialist to visit with a new mom intending to breastfeed. The ANA has always supported and endorsed nursing education at the bedside.
