This current presidential campaign has exposed the sad truth in American politics: money and lobbyists play an important role in the message we receive about the candidates and their positions. Regardless of which party you may be affiliated with, the time has come to take money and lobbyists out of politics. The only effective way to do this is to amend the U.S. Constitution to prevent elected officials from receiving anything of value, other than a reasonable salary, for doing their jobs and mandating public finance of political campaigns. With this aim in mind, I propose the following as the 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution: No member of the legislative, executive, or judicial branch shall receive anything of value for performing their duties under this Constitution, other than a reasonable salary, to be established in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution. All campaigns for federal office shall be publicly financed at amounts to be established by Congress and approved by the President. It is only by removing money and lobbyists that we can get back to the true meaning of democracy- a representative government for all people, not just those with the financial means to control the message, the legislators, and the outcomes.
