Network Rail has ruined the appearance of Alexandra Palace Station. Alexandra Palace used to be one of the most attractive stations on the busy King's Cross line out of London, with a pretty little Italianate ticket office of the late 19th century looking out over the tracks. Overhead power lines damaged the station's appearance - that was inevitable - but Network Rail has chosen to make things worse by adding "improvements" that have taken away more than they've given. The latest insult includes a new platform, two brick boxes, a huge blue staircase and a massive metal gantry. The gantry and the staircase block views of the ticket office, but to make matters worse, Network Rail has added aggressive spikes. The result is that Alexandra Palace now looks like a high-security prison. It's probably not entirely Network Rail's fault. It obviously doesn't employ staff with enough skill to design well. If you employ under-skilled staff, then this is what they'll come up with. Unfortunately, however, railway land is exempt from planning permission, so Network Rail hasn't had to submit its proposals to scrutiny either of the public or a body representing the public good. We therefore have to appeal to the Secretary of State for the Environment to intercede. Network Rail cannot be allowed to continue to get away with insults like this - or to defend them on the grounds that they are delivering improved services. When improvements take away more than they give, the public has been done a disservice. Please sign this online petition, and ask your friends to sign too, so we can appeal to the government to force Network Rail to undo its bad work at Alexandra Palace (and elsewhere) and stop it from ever carrying out work of this abysmal quality anywhere else.
