Comments: I work for the Nashville School District, Nashville, AR, in the special education classes at Nashville Junior High School. I am the paraprofessional in the Math classes. In Arkansas, high school students are required to take EOC (End of Course) tests in Algebra and Geometry in order to graduate with a diploma. Students with an IEP, who attend the Special Education Resource Room for Math, complete an Alternative Math Portfolio during their Freshman year. This Alternative Math Portfolio is accepted by the State of Arkansas as the EOC in Algebra and Geometry for these students. The students must still make PROFICIENT on the portfolio, but are allowed to graduate with a diploma, if they have fulfilled all the other requirements for graduation. California could implement such a program for students, like Katie, who have completed all other requirements for graduation, and have received their math instruction in a resource math class. It is unfair to penalize special education students, like Katie, who have worked so very hard to meet all the requirements set for graduation, AND done so, except for passing a state mandated exam. Schools work hard at stressing how they help build a student's self-esteem; but what is this practice of denying a special education student a diploma, because they were unable to pass a portion, or even all parts, of the California State mandated exam, especially if no other option, such as the opportunity to complete an alternative portfolio, was given to the student, saying to these students? I am fully aware of the California Exit Exam controversy, having lived in California from 1989-2005. I was nanny for a student, who graduated, in 2007, from the same high school Katie attends. This child was also a special education student who attended resource and regular education classes. I know the struggles and stress this child had with the exit exams. He was finally able to pass the math exam, by the slimmest of margins; but he was fortunate because he would still have been allowed to graduate, with a diploma, because of the exemption that was in place in 2007 for special education students who had completed all other graduation requirements. I call on Governor Brown, the California Legislature, and the California Department of Education to review and revise, or otherwise make alternative options available to special education students in California in regards to the California High School Exit Exam.

Comments: The basis of Special Education is to treat each student as an individual. It is obvious that Katie has worked hard and is thoughtful and articulate. Students like her should not be denied the opportunity to graduate because of an arbitrary standardized requirement designed for others.

Comments: There are many hardworking children like Katie with physical, mental and/or learning challenges that have put in more time and effort than neurotypical children and deserve their diplomas!

Comments: I think that Katie should be allowed to graduate because the ruling was that she did not have to complete the math portion last year. That should still be in effect for Katie Burwell

Comments: That California legislators refuse to vote a permanent exemption, from meeting the CAHSEE requirement as a condition of receiving a diploma for eligible students with disabilities, is beyond comprehension. Good luck, Katie ! Noria.
