Allow Backyard Hens in Great Falls: Support Urban Sustainability and Local Food Security
Petition to Allow Backyard Hens in Great Falls, Montana
Introduction:
We, the undersigned, are residents of Great Falls, MT, who seek to amend our city's current ordinances to allow each household the right to keep up to 5 hens in their backyard. This initiative aims to promote sustainability, enhance local food security, and provide significant economic relief by reducing grocery bills.
Background:
As the cost of living continues to rise, many cities across the United States have embraced urban agriculture to help residents offset high grocery prices. By allowing the raising of backyard poultry, these cities have reported increased access to fresh foods and a reduction in household spending. Unfortunately, current zoning laws in Great Falls restrict our ability to engage in these beneficial practices.
The Benefits:
1. Economic Savings: With the rising cost of groceries, especially eggs, families could save over $200 annually by producing their own eggs.
2. Health and Nutrition:
Fresh eggs from backyard hens are more nutritious and free from the processing chemicals common in industrial agriculture.
3. Environmental Impact:
Raising hens supports sustainable living practices by reducing food miles and producing natural fertilizer for gardens.
4. Educational Opportunities:
Managing hens provides families, particularly children, with hands-on education about food sources and responsible animal care.
Proposal:
We propose a change to allow each household in Great Falls to keep up to 5 hens (excluding roosters to avoid noise issues). We suggest implementing standards for coop construction, placement, and maintenance to ensure cleanliness and orderliness, minimizing any potential nuisances.
Call to Action:
By signing this petition, you not only support sustainable living practices but also help our community combat the rising costs of living. We call upon the Great Falls City Council to consider our proposal in their next session and recognize the positive impacts that urban backyard hens can have on our economy and environment.
Conclusion:
Thank you for your support. By coming together, we can implement this cost-saving measure and foster a more sustainable and economically resilient community in Great Falls, MT.

I have been spending my evenings reading through the stories you all are leaving in the comments about how much easier it would be to feed your families if we had this right in our own yards. These stories are exactly why I started this and they confirm that we are asking for something both reasonable and necessary for our neighbors.

Seeing this kind of momentum confirms that I am not the only family in Great Falls struggling with rising grocery bills. It feels incredible to know so many neighbors believe in the same sustainable future for our backyards.

We live in Montana for crying out loud. This should be something we are allowed to do.
Strong supporter of this change - even Bozeman and Missoula have made room for chickens in the city limit. It makes sense!
People need all the help they can get in making ends meet. Organic eggs are so expensive in the store.
I have Squirrels and bunnies and deer in my yard why not hens, an animal that poops breakfast at least.
Because a family should have the best food available to then. Chicken eggs are important for good health. Will save family money in the long run . I HAVE HAD PEOPLE WHO HAD EXTRA eggs give them to me free. Which also helped me out.
Yes please allow them!
This needs to happen! Please change the current status and let residents have hens

Chickens are great! I understand why a rooster is hard in town, but sustainability it so important.
