Dear Mr. Vice President:
You have received many requests, pleas, and prayers to run for President. Some are due to a firm belief that you – and the people of the United States – were robbed by the theft of election 2000. Others reflect the judgment that you are simply the best candidate for the job. I have a foot in both camps.
I was a student member of McGovern state campaign headquarters in Boston in 1972 and later interned in Washington before completing graduate school. Despite many disappointments, I’ve never lost the belief that we can accomplish good things through the political process.
For that reason, it was my great pleasure to support you in the 2000 primaries as well as the general election. I wasn’t able to give you much money, but wrote letters to friends, to delegates here and in other states, to the editors and columnists of numerous newspapers, and just about everything else I could think of to promote your candidacy. (My good friends whom you know, Maryann and John of Nashua, did yeoman work on your campaign.)
It’s not hard to understand why you wouldn’t care to run in the primaries again. However, there is a growing urgency among grass-roots Democrats who are appalled by the current choices for a presidential nominee. Along with so many others, I want to be part of a “Draft Gore” movement. While I’m firmly convinced that you were already elected President once, this is not about symbolism. The country is in dire straits. We face terribly difficult challenges at home and abroad. We need a President with clear vision and genuine ability to alter the disastrous course BushCo has put us on. We need you. The people running the country will do anything to stay in power, but I’m encouraged by the new study showing that you would defeat any Republican, while Sen. Clinton and others would lose to any Republican (http://www.prweb.com/releases/2006/5/prweb391395.htm).
