His Excellency Ban Ki-Moon Secretary-General of the United Nations New York, New York 10017 Dear Secretary-General, We are writing to respectfully urge you to take necessary steps to recognize Bangla (Known as Bengali) language as an official language of the United Nations. With more than 250 million total speakers, Bengali is one of the most spoken languages in the world. Most importantly 60% of these people do not know any other language. At this moment Bangla holds the 4th position (ranking fifth or sixth according to some other information, please see the sources below) by population and people from more than 15 countries speak Bangla. Bangla is the second language in Sierra Leone. But interestingly, the UN has recognized 6 languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) as official languages of the United Nations. Bengali is the language of famed poet Rabindranath Tagore, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913. Bengali speakers were killed in police firing while fighting for their language. Support for the appeal to declare Bengali as an official language of the United Nations has come from Bangladesh, the Indian states of Assam, Tripura and West Bengal. We all demand UN documents in Bengali language. His Excellency, I believe that this is nothing but an injustice and unequal practice against Bengali speakers by the United Nations. So, please take necessary steps to recognize Bangla language as an official language of the United Nations. Thanking you, Sincerely yours, All the people who sign on this petition
