Mike PrasseAccd. to the AKC spokesman David Roberts: "Dogs will be sold in pet stores whether or not AKC registers them. However the AKC feels that by bringing more registrants into the AKC fold we have the opportunity to educate them and involve them in programs that promote responsible dog ownership. " Wow! Is that waay too late or what!!! And gee, what does AKC suppose would happen if they said they would NOT register puppies from puppy mills? Could they really be so stupid as to think that would not have a huge impact on the puppy mill industry? He goes on: ...The AKC has undertaken a strategic plan to reverse the significant decline in registrations that has occurred during the last decade. The plan includes a number of separate initiatives. Together these initiatives are designed to regain market share, while maintaining a registry of unequaled integrity and size." Sounds like the means justify the ends. Disgusting. To contact AKC about this issue, Mr. Roberts provides this link: puppyreg@akc.org I suggest we all use it!

Julie PriceMost reputable breeders do not sell puppies in any pet store. Please do not make it easier for people to sell poorly bred dogs and have them registered with the AKC.
Tamara Trostle
Carol RivetteI can see a strong conflict of interest when a registry starts selling dogs.
Mary KistnerDon't sell out our pure bred dogs for the sake of profit. You're contract with Petland is a stamp of approval to all puppy mills. Look to other sources to reduce AKC expenses, such as maintaining 2 offices, high executive saleries, etc.
Susan FagnandPride and Care and put into the breeding of our dogs. And most ethical Breeders refuse to have thier dogs advertised or placed in a pet store for consignment or otherwise. therefore promotion should be placed with the breeder that has placed love and devotion into bettering their breed of choice. It has been shown and proven that health and welfare of dogs that are produced from "rapid breeders" for low cost and high sales revenues has come from Pet store sales. They have to mass produce dogs for sale in order to make a profit. Breeding is not about PROFIT! Many of these dogs have medical and temperment issues and the AKC has breeder ethics on their site and therefore by promoting "education of petstores" is not a solution by providing them "puppy's for sale" Pet store buyers are impulse . Majority of buyers of pet store puppies aren't interested in education. I am a ethical breeder and only produce dogs for myself first and then for the audience that has been waiting. AKC shouldn't promote and remove this from their agenda. I will not promote a organization that promotes such activities.

ann albrightI agree the AKC MUST PUT A STOP TO PUPPY MILLERS, THEY ARE THE ONE'S CAUSING THE PROBLEMS WITH RESCUE OVERLOADING. AKC MUST TAKE RESPONSIBLITY AND STAND UP FOR THE GENUINE BREEDERS...

Mary Lee RainesI have 12 dogs, 3 fosters. I train dogs and I teach agility and obedience and have for about 10 years. I am on the board of an club that puts on AKC trials. I compete. I am also a show secretary for a breed club. If the agreement between Petland and AKC is not rescinded, I will cease to participate in any AKC events--not as a secretary, not as a competitor, not as a person helping to put on AKC trials.

Claudia KlikoffIn addition, catering to Pet shops and HVb's goes agains the AKC mission which is the betterment of pure bred dogs. Another point is that dealers can say that they are AKC recognized which is misleading to the public who are expecting only quality puppies to be sanctioned by AKC.

Sandra GraffDo not more forward with any sort of relationship between AKC and PetLand or any other pet shop/puppymill organization. This type of activity only hurts breeders who are working hard to improve dog breeds with well planned breeding programs based on genetic improvemnts and not simply breeding for profit!

Carol FordThere are too many dogs that are put to sleep (KILLED) just because they are not wanted. This will only add many more! AKC please reconsider!!! Puppymills and petstores are a big problem. They are not selling healthy or purebred dogs. I know this to be true. I've known people who bought from a petstore and ended up having unhealthy and unstable dogs. What is wrong with you guys??? Reponsible, reputable breeders stand behind their dogs, help the new owners for life, and take back their dogs if need be. You are doing a terrible thing. Wake up!
Joan MorningstarWe breeders demand that AKC forces Petland to enforce a Spay/Neuter program with each and every dog that is bought and registered with AKC. That is how we can keep these dogs future GET from going into rescue and animal control.
AnonymousI have been a devoted and dedicated hobby breeder since 1980, I have also volunteered my services to breed rescue many years now. I have witnessed the numbers of unhealthy, unsocialized, untrainable pet dogs in our rescue from pet shops and puppy mills. They cause heart ache and head ache. These dogs are sold to any one with money. Education is a must and AKC needs to wake up and stop playing both sides of the fence!
AnonymousIt is sad that the very people that have supported AKC in the past are the ones that they are alienating with this new association. I hope AKC survives this one!

Barbara LindenAKC should be encouraging ALL breeders to do proper health screening to ensure that "registered" means a QUALITY dog. We all know that puppy millers only care about $$. Such a shame for the poor dogs AND the people who pay for them.

Deborah J. FranksI hope the AKC can get out of the contract. It is a slap in the face of the people who believed the AKC had a higher standard and actually wanted to help put an end to puppy mills, ..instead they endorse them. It is unbelievable!!

alice brochnerplease do not support the disgrace of puppy mills by association with petland

Donna SmithStop the alliance with Petland before AKC loses all credibility.
Joanne KlovaYou pose as the guardian of purebred dogs, of their health and soundness. Stop this alliance with puppy millers and brokers whose only consideration is money. If you are unable to manage your budget-cut back on personnel, services, shows. Raise fees if you must but don't succumb to a quick fix by taking puppy millers into the fold. They will be your ruination.
Pamela WilliamsAKC support of Petland is in direct conflict with the supposed mission statement and objectives.
Ann CalhounI've written several newspaper columns about what the AKC has been up to with their mail fraud (knowingly selling "papers" that they know are no bood, from litters they've already canceled and using the US. mail to do it) as well as all the "tax-free " registration money they collect on a Stud Registry that one of their top investigators, on ABC News, estimated was about 50% no good and now they're in bed with High Volume Breeders? Typical.

Steve MoonCut your ties now with this puppy mill promoter or I will cut mine with the AKC.

Carol D'AloisioWith this alliance you are undermining all the years we have spent to keep the quality and temperament first and foremost in our purebred breeds. We are the caretakers and this alliance will diminish what an AKC registered dog means to the general public. By creating a line in the sand against other valid registeries, you have also lessened your influence instead of joining together in an alliance with the dogs welfare and health at the heart of the matter. There are some crazy registries created by the need to have "papers" for their mutts. This is what you will become an analogy for with this crawling in bed with Petland. Those other valid registries are looking better and better. We as concerned breeders will find a place to keep our lines pure. Apparently you feel you have outlived your usefullness.
Michael AtkinsonThis is detestable. Once again, the AKC doesn't care about the people trying to better breeds. They only care about their pocketbooks!
