We the undersigned, support the proposal to name the barrier island in honor of the Ais Indians.
For thousands of years, a native culture named by the Euopeans as Ais (Ays, Aiz) Indians lived and thrived in the area of the Barrier Islands of Brevard County. This culture left their
mark with many archaeological sites that include mounds, middens and artifacts.
Many in favor of naming this island " Ais Island" have various and unique reasons including but not limited to; finding the name Ponce de Leon as inappropriate, historical evidence in ancient maps indicating it was named Ais before, to honor this great ancient culture, to bring more historical public interest to our local area, and that the Ais name has been used before and should be restored.
We respectively plead with the US Board on Geographic Names that they choose the name "Ais Island" over other proposed names for the aforementioned reasons.
