Comments: All aspects of planning have been hit so hard by the recession that it only makes sense to maintain the little diversity there is in the field by allowing the continuing education providers to continuie doing their jobs. The quality, pricing, and availability of continuing education needs to be rethought by AIP. I believe the above presented argument to be sufficient for APA/AIP to revamp their current CM program. I am only a student but hope to become a certified planner and that I can continue to count on continuing education to keep me current.

Comments: I believe that this current practice will limit the number of continuing education courses that would otherwise become available.

Comments: Am not an AICP member, but have seen repeatedly how misguided, unfair and foolish the present CM program can be.

Comments: I am an environmental planner and was the Coordinator ASU's Planning and Design Academy within the College of Design for 3 years. The fees did impact us, but I believe some of your calculations are overstated. To become a CM provider i began offering courses with the $50 per credit hour, but quickly recognized that a flat fee assessment of $1995 (for universities) was a better deal IF I was able to run enough programs to bring the cost down to $300 per class (7 courses a academic year). When I was paying the per credit fee, I found that giving full credit for 8 hours of contact was expensive ($400), but I could spread it out amongst 20-30 students. So it boils down to the numbers. Despite that rationalization, we too ran on a very tight budget and ultimately last year attendance was so low that the program did not pay for itself and I cancelled the $1995 yearly subscription and moved to the per credit hour fee. I worked with AIA and ASLA and agree that APA/AICP's goal to raise the bar and provide credentials (instead of self reporting) was worthy, but way over the top. Phone calls were not returned and the website was a disaster for the first year. I hope something changes, our program is on sabbatical.

Comments: ...nothing wrong with continuing education, as long as it isn't onerous in its requirements, and is flexible in accomodating people in different places and different times (which the CM program is definitely not)...and as long as there isn't a single gatekeeper making decisions behind closed doors, who reduces competition and drives up prices....and who in fact has a financial incentive to do so.
