Ever had people telling you that u had the Elle Macpherson's body?? BUT NO~! You just had to lose the last millimetre of stubborn fat? But what if you weren't fat? What if it was only your mind affected by family problems, social pressures and stress that was playing tricks on you? And the endless crash diets you put yourself through was making you waste away?
My classmates and I are raising this issue to the public on an international level, to promote the awareness of anorexia and its harmful consequences.
To whet your appetite, here are some statistics on Anorexia sufferers.
one out of every one hundred young women between ten and twenty are starving themselves.
8 million people in the United States alone suffer from some sort of eating disorder.
52% of adolescents begin dieting before the age of 14.
15% of girls who suffer from anorexia will die from it
Without treatment, the death rate is 20-30% due to complications from the illness.
Do you know that by engaging in unheathy practices such as starvation and excessive dieting, our young people are slowly killing themselves?
Together, what we can do is to stop portraying shockingly thin waifs on television and our newspapers as beautiful and ideal. A psychological study in 1995 found that 3 minutes spent looking at models in a fashion magazine caused 70% of women to feel depressed, guilty and shameful. We have to take action against drawing people to this bottomless void. The moment a person becomes anorexic, the damage done may be irreparable. |
