Comments: I think a condolence letter from the President would mean alot to those military families who have lost someone to suicide. I myself have experienced the pain of losing a loved one to suicide, not only once but twice within two months time. A simple letter would show me how much that person cares. Thank You, Irene Moore

Comments: As a practicing psychologist familiar with depression and PTSD, I am a strong supporter of removing the ban associated with providing condolence letters to the family members of fallen service men and women for whom the cause of death is suicide. Changing this practice would serve as a means of recognizing the survivors of the suicide who lost a family member that was serving our country.

Comments: No matter how the soldier died, the family deserves condolences because if it was suicide, that soldier should have been sent home to heal. It was beyond the family's control having them in the middle of a war they did not initiate, but suffer all the consequences. God bless, Nana to 12 in the South Bronx

Comments: Please bear in mind and respect the very real, mind-altering suffering which leads individuals to suicide. Suicide is not a coward's choice - it is a consequence of grave illness which robs the individual and his or her loved ones of a precious life. Surely the relationship between combat and mental illness is evident by now. In these cases a soldier has sacrificed peace of mind and reason on behalf of this country just the same as another has sacrificed the physical body when killed in battle. We can work together as a nation to prevent both instances.

I ask that you honor her memory and the memory of all others who suffer a difficult life and see no other option for escape by doing as requested above. I respect you as a President and am proud to have you serve, and lead, our Nation. Please commit to something which would make me even more proud.

Comments: Just as any other illness your body may have mental illness is and does need help to be cured and dealt with. My son died honorably in the military. He was also and EMT and fire fighter who saved lives. He would have helped you to see that all illnesses are in need of help and curing. Change this policy to include this illness just as any other illness a military person can die from.
