Name: Amy Flanary on Jun 6, 2011Address: PO Box 1944State: VirginiaComments: I have a stepson who suffered severely from PTSD after tours in Iraq first with the Marines, and then the Army. I firmly believe counseling was extremely helpful in helping him re-integrate, though he is currently 60% disabled with PTSD and will likely suffer with it the rest of his life. Many soldiers and Marines don't seek out help for fear of appearing "weak." For some, suicide seems to be their only option, the only relief from hallucinations, nightmares and the host of other symptoms they suffer. I believe they are still very much a casualty of war and should be recognized in the same manner casualties in the field are.Flag

Name: Margaret Wise on Jun 30, 2011Address: 244 mountwell avenueState: New JerseyComments: As the mother of a young woman who committed suicide, I strongly resent the implication that suicide reflects cowardice. War sadly often results in damage to bodily organs of participants. Serious damage is produced by stress as well as by physical trauma. In the case of the heart, damage may result in cardiac arrest leading to death. In the case of the brain, damage may result in self destructive behavior including death by suicide. We readily honor soldiers who sustain sufficient damage to other body parts to result in death. And we claim to be the most scientifically advanced nation on earth. Yet ARE WE STILL SO PITIFULLY BACKWARD that we do not recognize that mental illness leading to suicide is based in the same biochemical reality as failure of other body parts? Loved ones of suicides already deal with enormous pain compounded by bigotry from the uneducated. Please do not make it worse by refusing to acknowledge what they gave to our country. Send them Presidential Condolences.Flag

Name: Linda Cheek on Jul 1, 2011Address: 143 Ponte Verda DrState: South CarolinaComments: Suicide along with PTSD are major risks for soldiers who have been in combat situations and I believe that if a family losses someone to suicide they need support and deserve condolence letters. Just because their loved one was lost to suicide and not in combat doesn't mean that the person's family who served is less deserving of a letter of condolence because the person they lost gave their life so that we can have freedom, even if the life wasn't lost during their actual time overseas their live was lost due to the terror they witnessed during their time serving.Flag

Name: Kristy Callies on Jul 11, 2011Address: 7831 151st Ln NWState: MinnesotaComments: On February 6, 2009 my brother, Danny, committed suicide. I have witnessed the aftermath of such a tragedy. I believe that we need to unite as a people to shed light on untreated depression, which ultimately takes the lives of people every single day...our servicemen and women sacrifice so much for our freedoms of this Country, I believe the least we can do is reach out and help them as much as possible, and why not send them a letter to acknowledge the love one lost. Thank you,Flag

Don't penalize those who will need years of support to overcome a serious loss in their life. In many to most cases, many of these victims never fully recover but learn to adjust to a world much different than they ever would have night-mared..Flag
