Currently there is a policy that is being considered by the US Department of Labor to change affirmative action called Affirmative Action and Nondiscrimination Obligations of Contractors and Subcontractors Regarding Individuals with Disabilities. This change involves requiring federal contractors to hire a quota of disabled veterans and gives employers an specific actions they must take to meet the quota. Statistics from the Veterans Affairs website state that at this time there are 21.6 million veterans and 14 percent of all veterans have a service related injury. According to the US Bureau of Work Statistics 8.3 percent of all veterans are unemployed. Veterans between the ages of 18 and 24 had a 29.1 percent unemployment rate in 2011. Non veteran males have a 17 percent rate of unemployment, a significant difference. However, comparatively the veterans to the non-veterans had the same work skills and experience. Our veterans are already having trouble being hired and if you add in that 80 percent of the men and women returning as veterans of the current war have a service related disability, their chances of employment are even lower. Show your support of the men and women who have paid the price of your freedom. By signing this petition you are signing your support of our disabled veterans finding gainful employment.
