I grew up coming to Acres of Books from Los Angeles with my parents, and I hate to think of its not being around any longer. There is simply nothing else like it anywhere near here.Flag

Name: Jeannette on Apr 13, 2007Comments: I love shopping at Acres of Books for books! It's a great store, in a historical building and does NOT be torn down. The city has no right to do this just for their own gain! How would they like if we by imminent domain took away their homes/businesses I bet they wouldn't like it one bit. We don't need any more townhomes, lofts, etc. in this area. We also don't need new stores, etc. to replace Acres of Books either! Long live Acres of Books!Flag

Name: J.E. McCaffrey on Apr 13, 2007Comments: Downtown LB is already starting to look too homogenous. Acres of Books is a landmark institution...Long Beach NEEDS more destinations like this, and at a time when cultural landmarks are at a premium I would think that Long Beach would want to preserve rather than bulldoze it in favor of more generic chains.Flag

Name: Gerard Eric Morel on Apr 13, 2007Comments: it is absolutely abhorrently reckless for the city of long beach to even consider demolishing an institution that provides the people with a vast treasure of knowledge. the people have spoken, and they do not want the historical site that houses ACRES OF BOOKS to remain where it is. members of long beach government: dont tear down our local paragon of knowledge.Flag

Name: Everett Harper on Apr 13, 2007Comments: I've loved Acres of Books since I first came to Long Beach in 1960. It is a true treasure for the city and one that could never be successfully moved. If losing this remarkable place would magically bring prosperity to the city that would be one thing but let's face it, downtown will only attract people with UNIQUE reasons to go there instead of dozens of alternative locales around the area.Flag

Name: Megan on Apr 13, 2007Comments: I've worked at Acres of Books for almost a year and I can say that it is one of the most fabulous places on earth. I had been in the store before I got a job and knew that this was the place that I had always dreamed of working at. I watch people everyday walk through the store in sheer amazement and joy. Recently people have come in with pleading looks saying "They aren't taking this place down too are they" Please let the answer to that question be a definite "no" because we would be loosing a very dear place for regular customers, strangers, and employees. This is home for many, don't take our home away.Flag

Name: Greg Bear on Apr 13, 2007Comments: Writers, artists, and thinkers for decades have flocked to Acres of Books. I've met actors, comedians, jazz musicians--creative people from around the world in that great barn of books. To lose Acres of Books would be like losing the heart of Long Beach--and part of its brain as well. It would be a tragedy--and a miscarriage of city government on a monumental scale.Flag

Name: Joshua Peralta on Apr 13, 2007Comments: The only person that I can think would want to bulldoze this important building and uniqe landmark is someone who has who never visited it. I'm not just being hyperbolic when I say that Acre's of Books is a literary mecca. It is a wonderfully quirky labyrinth of books that makes my heart swell with pride to live in a town that doesn't sacrifice sacred, honest-to-goodness independent businesses like this in the name of corporate America. To bulldoze Acre's of Books would be like to Long Beach what the burning of the library at Alexandria was to the ancient world. Please don't do it. It is among the nation's last truly great independent bookstore's like Manhattan's The Strand, San Francisco's City Lights, Portland's Powell's Books. The citizens of Long Beach and the surrounding communities need Acre's of Books.Flag
