Name: Lorraine Ondera on Jul 30, 2004State: INCountry: USComments: As a survivor of sexual abuse I strongly feel that by placing no limit on the time period alligations can be brought against perpetrators we will have a better chance of putting them behind bars. If there is no limitations then this will help victims that come forward in the present time. If their abuser has done this before then it would be legal for their past victims to come forward, strengthing the case. I am now 17 and recently put my perpetrator behind bars. Even though I got justice, it still would have made the case easier, and stronger if his daughters that he abused could have told about what happened. Yet because of the limitations the law protected my abuser once again. Please take my words and the words of many into consideration. Thank youFlag

Name: Barbara Forman on Jun 23, 2005State: TNCountry: USComments: When Freud discovered that the psychological problems suffered by many adults were due to being sexually abused as children, pressure from his peers caused him to 'admit' he was mistaken. Thanks to him, abusers continued their practices for 50 years secure in the knowledge that scarred survivors who dared speak out would be passed off by authorities because the 'alleged' abuse was ALL A FANTASY OF THE VICTIM! This statute of limitations continues this reprehensible tradition. I spent more than half my life in Oklahoma, and still have family and friends there. It's embarassing that the legal system is still carrying such dark ages style statutes on the books.Flag

Name: LISA NEAL on Sep 2, 2005State: TNCountry: USComments: My daughter at 24 is strong enough and quite frankly, anxious to confront her ex-stepfather for the 10 years of perverted sexual abuse (age 10-20) (1992-2002) he tortured her with on a daily basis. Amazingly, after being found out, he walked in and confessed to Youth Services in Nashville what he had done to her in addition to 3 other underage girls. The authorities have this confession on tape. However, we have hit a brick wall in every legal way to have him charged due to the complicated statute of limitations in Tennessee for crimes against children. More importantly, my daughter remains fearful that other young girls are still being prayed upon by him. He remains in the Antioch, TN area. He already served time in California in the early 1980's for the same thing. Tennessee law inforcement know this as well. But still nothing can be done I am told because of the statute. A pretty sad state of affairs when you can't prosecute someone who has confessed to such a vicious crime. I keep thinking I have just not written a letter to the right person yet or talked to the right legislator. I am sure this has happened to others As emotionally unsettling as this is, we still live with fear every day of the innocent children who are suffering because our legal system doesn't punish such vile acts. Any type of closure would help my daughter and myself immensely at this point in time. Therapy has helped us, but until some action is taking regarding this statute of limitations, I won't rest.Flag

Name: Carey O'Connor on May 5, 2007State: NYCountry: USComments: I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. I am 34 yrs. old now and when I disclosed at the age of 15, my mother sided with my father in law and I was told to never talk about it again. In those days, the county wouldn't protect the child and press charges. They do now, but alot of us, whom worked through our abuse and are strong enough now to face our perpetrators cannot because of the laws that protect them. I'd love to know how to start a petition in NY to drop the statue of limitations in any sexual abuse case. We need to stand up and take control of these predators. If we want Zero tolerance, then there shouldn't be laws protecting these people. Thank you, and if anyone could send me information on how to start a petition, I would greatly appreciate it. When an adult violates a child, damage is done, sometimes the damage doesnt become evident until years later, as is my situation.
