It's Time Illinois Ended the Death Penalty.
I agree with the many Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) past-presidents who believe it is time to abolish the death penalty in Illinois. Since Illinois reestablished the death penalty in 1977, our state has been forced to release 18 innocent men from death row while it has executed 12 other death row inmates. Because of this state's record of having to release more wrongly convicted men from death row than were executed, a moratorium on executions was imposed almost eight years ago.
As the Chicago Tribune has recognized, the reform process has not proven that the death penalty can be made reliable or just. In addition, millions of dollars are expended each year to sentence just a tiny number of defendants to death. Meanwhile, many other capital murder cases are successfully resolved without the death penalty.
