The petition
The death penalty violates one of the fundamental human rights- the right to live your life.
We are opposed to the use of the death penalty, anywhere, for any crime.
Nobody deserves to die, no matter how inhumane the crime they have committed. Let them stay in jail for the rest of there life and live the mistake they have made and suffer for the pain they have put others through.
There is no scientific evidence that the death penalty deters crime any more than other forms of punishment, and it can deprive victims and families of victims to get back on there feet.
At least if the perpertrator is in jail the victims know they are suffering.
At least 120 countries have abolished the death penalty, and on average three countries abolish it each year. Asia is the worst country for the death penalty executing a disturbing number of people each year, often following torture or unfair trials.
Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan from Australia's Bali Nine were sentenced to death after being caught with herion at Bali airport and now another 4 of them have had there sentence change from 20 years to death after an appeal. Verdicts remain for another two and the female of the group Renae Lawrence's sentence has remaind at 20 years.
I can understand why some penalties are worse than others in this case but the death penalty is not neccesary. Make them live the rest of there lives in a Bali jail, this would be teaching them more of a lesson than killing them.
Please help us lobby to the Australian Government to make a difference in these countries.
We wish to gain recognition from the Australian Government in regards to abolishing the death penalty in these countries across Asia by March 2007.
We want to increase the number of Amnesty International supporters by 40%, they are leading the growing campaign for a world without executions, by March 2007.
We want to gain media attention and publicity using a range of tactics including this petition to help fight for a world without executions.
Innocent people are executed and in every country where the death penalty is used, there is a risk an innocent person will be put to death.
That could one day be you.
Help us Fight!
