1156 Florrie LovelockJust to add to this petition I would like to add that I know what happens when uranium is brought to the surface. It's like letting radiation loose to anyone within five miles of the test spots. To prove this just visit some of the people in that area who were affected the last time they tried to do this monsterous thing, If it comes to living without electricity, I would rather that then live with CANCER.

1161 Wanda LaurinGovernment needs to support and protect their residents, not corporations. Governments need to be open and accountable in their dealings with the public in regard to corporate development. Residents are the backbone of this country, therefore, governments need to respect the rights of residents of Canada first and foremost, even in the face of corporate pressure to develop, especially in the face of corporations causing grievous environmental damage.

1171 Diane Van KeulenTo Whom it May Concern (and I certainly hope it concerns a lot of people!) This is my first time publically expressing my concerns about the gross environmental irresponsibiliy of the Ontario government. I am hoping and praying that W5 can help. It is in regards to Aboriginal Land Claims issue, uranium mining, OUR environment and the Ontario Government's refusal to obey a Supreme Court Ruling regarding Aboriginal Land Rights. I attended a seminar in my small town of Beaverton a few weeks ago, and I was shocked at what had been happening in the Shabot Lake area around Peterborough. I will not pretend to have all the facts, but somethings STINKS about how the courts and government have handled a peaceful blockade to prevent Frontenac Ventures from staking, and doing exploratory drilling on Ardock Algonquin First Nations AND private landowners' lands. The case went to court in March, and an Aboriginal Chief and professor at Queen's University, Bob Lovelace, was fined and jailed along with Paula Sherman who was fined and charged. At the same time, 3 private landowners were also charged with contempt of court facing possible fines. On the court date, Bob was arrested and fined, Paula was fined, and the 3 "white" private landowners charges were dropped. These is a clear case of racism if I ever heard of one! The Aboriginal Peoples are requesting a moratorium on any exploration and mining of Uranium (you should research what happens when "tailings" are left on the ground and the effect radon gas has on the environment - another entire issue worth exploring...ever heard of Elliot Lake and the Serpent River?). I believe they now have the support of several communities but it isn't enough. So, Why has the Ontario Government broken the law with no consequences? Why has Bob Lovelace been jailed and fined for protecting Algonquin Law? Why has Paula Sherman been charged with a "gag" order for telling people what was going on? What happened to freedom of speech? Why were the landowners who fully supported the First Nations in their blockade, emotionally, and physically, let go? Why did the Ministry of Natural Resources give the permits to Frontenac to begin mining in an area which, apparently, contains a poor grade of uranium ore anyway? Why is no one concerned about the effect of pulling Uranium out of the ground with no regard to the toxic effects (other than the above mentioned groups)? Because of the history link and the obvious environmental links, I have been sharing this topic with my grade 6,7, and 8 Science classes at Beaverton Public School. A real life lesson! My students are also concerned about what is happening as they realize what happens today will affect them and their children in the future! How can we be expected to teach our students to stop racism, protect our environment, and crave justice and fairness when all around them in the "real" world, adults that are supposedly in charge of protecting our land are doing the opposite? Here are some links to help you understand what I cannot explain as well.. http://www.aafna.ca/Uranium_mining.html http://www.aafna.ca/Final_negot.html http://sumoud.tao.ca/?q=node/view/983 http://opirgkingston.org/2008/02/support-robert-lovelace/ (read the Ammesty International article) http://www.ccnr.org/nuclear_primer.html#WT (learn about uranium mining!) http://www.theviennacafe.ca/provincial-politics/why-bob-lovelace-is-in-jail.html (written by a reporter from the Kingston Whig paper) http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/aafn/ (a letter to Dalton McGuinty) Please let me know if you feel this is a topic you could embrace! There is something very wrong here and we, the people, need to know! Sincerely, and with all due respect, Diane Van Keulen Beaverton, Ontario 705-426-1307

1184 Andre AugerI have just learned of these matters through a group at my church. I am appalled at the harshness of the judge's sentence. I am equally dismayed that the Province of Ontario seems to continue to disregard both First Nations and environmental issues.
