The purpose of this petition is to address the punishment administered to Cadet Joseph Toscani. What he did as a means of correcting Cadet Kraft was wrong and deserving of punishment. It not only breached the regulations and standards we, as cadets, are held to, but the morality of being a Citadel leader; and therefore, should not be tolerated. Cadet Toscani agrees that he was wrong, has apologized for his actions and has expressed deep remorse over the incident. However, we believe the punishment Cadet Toscani received- expulsion- is inappropriate for his transgressions when compared to the punishment received by other cadets who recently committed similar or even more severe offenses. Learning from one’s mistakes plays a significant role in the creation of a Citadel Man or Woman. We believe that Cadet Toscani- aside from this one incident- has been a model cadet who has greatly benefitted from his nearly two years at our college, and deserves the opportunity to atone for his mistakes and ultimately graduate from the institution he is so deeply proud of and believes in with all of his being.
