Dear [Decision maker],
Food companies in our Canada and the world are looking for cheaper ingredients to make more profit. These companies need ingredients such as potatoes and because they purchase them at very low costs, farmers have to find a cheaper method to grow potatoes. This leads farmers to resort to unsustainable practices. One of these practices is known as monoculture farming in which only one "cash crop" is planted throughout the farm. In Canada, potato farms only plant potatoes. This is horrible because the soil has nutrients in it and monoculture leads to depletion of these nutrients. There is not enough time for them to replenish which leads to over fertilization. Also, if there are pests, they will wipe out the whole farm and because of this, huge amounts of pesticides and herbicides have to be used. Eventually this leads the land to being unusable without putting a lot of fertilizers and this might result in clear cutting areas so more land is found for farms. This is known as deforestation which is another problem we currently face. We have to stand up for our Earth and save it from these money hungry food companies! Sign the petition to help us achieve our goal!
Sincerely,
