There can be no democracy or even a semblance of human rights anywhere until women and girls can live without the constant and very real threat of being raped or abducted from even their own homes. This is an embarrassing and shameful reflection on the United States' mission in Iraq, and also on local societies and cultures that permit the enslavement and abuse of women as a matter of "obedience" and "honor." In many cases it is outright slavery. We must rise to the occassion to speak the truth, without fear of offense or guilt, because there is a crisis at hand. Women all over the world must come together from across our divides and unite to rid the world of a current facist and apartheid regime of violence and enslavement against women. This is one of the most gravest issues of our time. As the occupying force in Iraq, the Unite States Government must prove to the world that the position of women in grave circumstances such as Iraq matter. Women united around the world at this outrage will not allow anyone to forget. |
