For 12 years, Jimmy Dowell has trekked out to a patch of highway median almost every afternoon and waved to the thousands of cars and trucks passing by. The "Waving Man" has been a shining inspiration to countless Virginians.
Dowell, who calls the 8-foot by 10-foot piece of median on U.S. 29 south of Charlottesville his church, explained it was the Lord who "told me to get out there and make new friends."
But now the Waving Man's waving days may be numbered.
Dowell soon may have to move out of his sister's house, which sits just feet from his perch at the intersection of U.S. 29 and Route 718. Because he may try to find a place in the city, there's no telling if he'll be able to continue spending the hours between 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. every day waving at motorists.
Jimmy's sister is an ELECTED OFFICIAL (Sheriff Johnson) for the City of Charlottesville. She is threatening to evict the Angel of Albemarle because she "wants to do some entertaining," and Jimmy's wave station is comparatively unimportant to Cornelia D. Johnson, the avowed public servant.
