World War II Hero, Doris Miller, Commemorative U.S. Postal Stamp

Doris (Dorie) Miller was born and raised in Waco, Tx. He enlisted with the Navy as Mess Attendant (one of few postitions available to African Americans at the time) in 1939.

On December 7, 1941, Miller's ship, the USS West Virginia, was attacked by Japanese aircraft and when Miller's Captain, Mervyn Bennion, was hit in the stomack with shrapnel, Miller dragged him to safety.

Without prior training, Miller manned a machine gun and shot down at least three, some eyewitnesses say four, of the twenty-nine Japanese planes.

The 37th Natinal Assembly of the Links, Inc. adopted a resolution to gather at least 1 million signatures by June 2005 in support of Ship's Cook, Third Class Doris Miller receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously for his courageous acts of valor in World War II.

Through the partnership with your organization, we can make this a reality by matching the one million signatures.

When the goal is met, and award honored, Doris Miler will be the first and only World War II African American sailor to receive this award.
