PaulaKeezerWAContrary to the WSF comment, motorcycles have actually decreased in size. The majority of motorcycles used for commuting on the road today range from tiny scooters to lighter faster street bikes, not the big gold wings or fat boys. One of the most popular bikes on the road today is the SV650. I small lean quick easy to ride machine. Lets see WSF back up their statments with real facts.

FredTuckerORThough I don't live in Washington, I do visit numerous times a year and according support the local economy. A disproportionate fare increase is unjust and discremenatory.
DannyPaulsenWA I believe that the percentage increase is unfair as you can get 4 bikes to a 4 wheel vehicle space as WF has noted but are now want to charge 50% of the rate of a for wheel vehicle, should be 25% thus a decrease in the rate is justified not an increase in the current rate. Also the motorcycles do still fit into spaces that 4 wheeled vehicle cannot and many motorcycles have not increased in size. Maybe just the ones you notice the most? Thank you.
JohnLewisWAIn an era when "family car" has often come to mean either a minivan, a hemi-engined SUV or a pickup truck with four full-size doors and an 8-ft. bed, it's hard to imagine that motorcycles have increased in size even in direct proportion to cars, let alone more quickly. While there may be more large touring rigs and Harleys on the road, there are also far more sportbikes, which are characteristically light and narrow. To suggest that motorcycles have, in fact, increased in size so as to represent a larger fractional amount of the behemoths currently prowling the road with 22 inches of bling under their swollen wheelwells is frankly absurd. WSF's position on this strikes me as an opportunistic attempt to extract cash from a minority segment of the ferrying population, a segment that, it should be noted, is particularly "ferry friendly" due to its ability to take advantage of the various parking interstices that might otherwise go unused. That motorcycles carry less fuel, rarely if ever have hazardous cargo aboard, are lighter in pounds per occupant, never need to be towed out of the way and never have their keys locked inside the vehicle are just further reasons to believe that they represent less overhead cost to the ferry system, per passenger hauled, than automobiles and trucks. As datapoints, the curb weight of a 2005 Chrysler Caravan (a highly popular family vehicle) exceeds 4,200 pounds. A 2005 Ford F150 pickup truck (marketed as "the most popular truck in America") weighs in at 5,577 pounds curb weight. The curb weight of a 2005 Honda Goldwing 1800 (one of the largest motorcycles on the road today) is 898 pounds, or 21 percent of the Caravan's weight (i.e. within one percent of the one-fifth multiplier currently in use), and only 16 percent of the Ford truck's weight. The extremely popular 2005 Yamaha R6, at 430 pounds, represents 10 percent of the Caravan's poundage and less than 8 percent of the Ford's weight. An R6 is also quite narrow and short. I would also urge the WSF system to remember that motorcyclists who ride the ferries regularly are not tourists, but taxpayers of the State of Washington who have standing to demand equal treatment on public amenities. Jack Lewis P.S. My own motorcycle is a 1969 model, and while it's heavier than a lot of the new bikes out there, I can assure you it hasn't gained any weight in the past 37 years.
RobNewmanWAI visit my brother in Bremerton from Renton frequently. Please be reasonable WSF
ColleenFirstWAI fully agree that the proposed rate hike is uncalled for. Motorcycles should be encouraged, as they offer so many benefits over cars with the WA Ferry System, let alone in other areas of our infastructure. Please take these "signatures" seriously, as we are adament about the benefits of riding vs driving.
MarlinSevyWAMy wife and I each have a motorcycle.
JonMolotteWAI wouldn't object so much accept for the fact the new narrows bridge should have been built on the north side of the peninsula to seattle.
Brian WaughWAPlease keep me posted on the status of this. I am happy to support in any way to support against the raising of rates to unfair levels for motorcycle riders.
TimothyDoaneI commute from Shelton Washington to Seattle every day. I take the Southworth Ferry to west Seattle. A motorcycle is my only option at this time. My motorcycle is a enduro (on/off road). It is still considered small by anybodies standards. Please don't raise the rates unfairly, Thank you.
StephenMcDermottWADaily Kingston/Edmonds 7:10/5:10 commuter and quit my carpool during summer to ride my Harley in. What a crock of crap. WSF says we take up 1/4, 1/5, whatever. It still remains that the ferry crews put us in locations no car can fit!! They put us single file next to trucks, vanpools, and tourists. They put us in the corner where no car can fit. We use your useless space and now raise rates AGAIN!!! What, 6% wasn't enough last year? So you do it again... but wait... we'll raise the MOTORCYCLES 14%!!! And how much money are you making on the Kingston/Edmonds run? Last year you had a 15% profit margin (115% of op costs covered by fares). Trying for the 25%? And you keep telling people we AREN'T PAYING ENOUGH??? BULLSHIT!

RandyBarbeeReally, motorcycles have not changed in size that much. Certainly they have not changed in size much compared to the difference in size from a car to a typical SUV
SharonRogersWAWhy 16 percent??? I would think you would encourage people to ride motorcycles.
PhilRayWAGiven the high cost of travel anywhere these days, why isn't the ferry system part of the highways system as is the west seattle bridge? Tolls should be lifted or placed on all travelers- just my thoughts. Phil

AnnaEsquibelWAI think the fare increase should be the same percentage increase as cars.
TodMonroeWAMotorcyclists should be treated fairly. If rates for ferry users are to be raised, so be it. However, keep the motorcycle rate hikes consistent with those for automobiles, SUVs, and pickup trucks.
AnonymousAnonymousI am a daily motorcycle commuter on the Bremerton Seattle run. We are almost exclusively placed in areas where cars cannot be parked on this route. Generally speaking we do not impact the number of cars that can be put on the boats on this run.

JAMESHARRISWAI work in Everett, so I commute from 5 to 7 days a week. I oppose the raise in ferry fares as unjust to motorcyclist in general. On 95 % of the ferry rides I take all motorcycles are still put in the out of the way locations on the ferry. The only time I have gotten to be placed in a regular lane is with only one of the Clinton / Mukilteo afternoon runs.

JamesGiffinWAYou can get 4 motorcycles in the space of 1 large car. Any tighter than that they will be damaged..

RobertEdmonsWAA group of us, 6 bikes, took a ride to the Kitsap, Saturday, using the Edmonds/Kingston ferry. They put us up front, where no cars could go. We did not take up any space a car could use. We took the Port Townsend/Keystone ferry back and were the last on the boat. We were in the back. All 6 Harleys took the space on one SUV! To increase the motorcycle fare at a disproportinatly high level is not fair. What the State needs to do is encourage motorcycle use, since we pollute less, damage the roads less, use less fuel and take up less space in general. Do not discourage motorcycle use.
AnonymousAnonymousIt's hard to believe that the rate should go up 14%. We don't take up near the room, nor do we abuse or misuse the WSF. Why are you doing this to us?
BradWhiteALWhen I ride I do so on motorcycle. I get three times the mileage as those SUV's and I take up one third of the space. The ferry service should be kissing my butt and shoving all the Tahoes overboard. But that's just my opinion... I could be wrong.
DennisReigelI drive a motorcycle with a sidecar... even with the sidecar I've never been parked in any of the car lanes.I've Always been directed to park the sides of the boat where no auto could ever be parked.
