The Washington State Ferries, WSF, have proposed an increase in ferry rates for automobiles and motorcycles. The proposed increase for automobiles is 6% while that for motorcycles is 14%. This is an unfair increase for motorcyclists who use the ferry system.
Motorcycles require less space than automobiles and trucks and should therefore be charged a proportionally lower fare. To date the WSF has based motorcycle fares on the basis that a motorcycle is one-fifth the size of a typical car or truck. WSF now wishes to consider a motorcycle to be one-fourth the size of a typical car or truck.
WSF argues that this is due to the increase in the size of the typical motorcycle. The undersigned disagree and note that, as with cars and trucks, motorcycles come in many sizes, small and large. We also take note of the fact that the large number of SUV's has increased the size of the typical car or truck so that motorcycles remain proportionally the same.
WSF statements to the contrary, motorcycles can be, and often are, loaded into locations on the ferries that automobiles and trucks cannot use and which would otherwise be wasted.
WSF should not single out the motorcycling community for a rate hike greater than that applied to other ferry users.
We the undersigned urge the WSF to not increase ferry rates for motorcycles by any percentage greater than that applied to cars and trucks. |
